The Russian armored infantry fighting vehicle BMD-4
The BMD-4 is a Russian armored infantry fighting vehicle destined for paratrooper units. It was developed in the year 2000 by VTZ of Volgograd. The BMD-4 was put into service, in limited numbers, in 2004.
The BMD-4 has the same 5 roller frame as its predecessor the BMD-3, with the powertrain in the rear. The vehicle is given a new Bakhtcha-U turret, meant to significantly ameliorate firepower. The Bakhtcha-U turret is derived from the weapons system of the BMP-3 and has enhanced fire control facing land and airborne targets. The BMD-4 is parachute ready when launched from a cargo plane equipped with a cargo drop ramp. The production of the BMD-4 was stopped with the development of the BMD-4M.
